Young Rocket is fascinated with astronomy and looking up into outer space! And her older brother seems to be obsessed with looking down at his phone. She’s super excited for tonight’s Phoenix meteor shower and she wants everyone in the neighborhood to witness the event with her. She makes announcements around town and hands out flyers to invite people for a viewing at the park. Her brother Jamal begrudgingly escorts Rocket to the park for the event, staring down at his phone the whole way there. As the meteor shower begins, he soon realizes that there are more wondrous and spectacular things to see when you just look up!

Nathan Bryon and Dapo Adeola smartly incorporate astronomy facts throughout: in speech bubbles that come from the mouth of Rocket, thus the STEM tag. Adeola’s illustrations are so engaging and descriptive. And how can you not instantly fall in love with Rocket, just look at that cute, curious child on the cover!

Take-away message: If you take the time to look away from your phone, you just might see something spectacular! It’s a great message about how kids’ obsession with screen time might be affecting others. When Jamal finally looks away from his phone to look eye-to-eye with his sister, Rocket emotes, “Jamal looks at me for the first time today. It feels like the first time ever.” It’s such a poignant line in the story and so relevant!
