Happy Hair is a vibrant celebration of textured hair and diverse hairstyles. There isn’t a traditional story structure but rather a collection of colorful imagery of brown-skinned girls rocking their unique hairstyles and positive affirmations encouraging self-love. I like that every depiction is so unique, there are various skin tones, hair styles, and clothing styles represented on every page. Every young brown-skinned reader is sure to find a character with which they can connect. Roe’s illustrations are bright and cheery and you can’t help but smile while reading this book.
Take-away message: As the author notes in her dedication, she wants young brown-skinned children to have the courage to “be free!” This book exudes positivity and is sure to boost your young reader’s self-esteem!
