I Am Mixed By Garcelle Beauvais and Sebastian A. Jones, Illustrated by James C. Webster (2012) – Hardcover
I Am Mixed follows mixed race twins Nia and Jay (their dad is White and their mom is Black) as they celebrate all of the attributes that make them unique. From their multicultural heritage to their skin tones, Nia and Jay are proud to represent “the best from all over the world.”
The authors include wonderful activity pages at the back of the book aimed at encouraging your little reader to explore their own identity. There is a blank family tree, a page for them to draw a self-portrait, an “About Me” fill-in-the-blank, and a fantastic teaching tool that offers parents a list of discussion questions on being mixed race.
Take-away message: Teaches mixed race children that being mixed is just one way that makes them extra special, and that they should be proud of their identity.
