What a delightful book! Rather than use famous names to teach children about success, Hamilton personalizes the story to the primary character, Riley. One day, big cousin Joe asks young Riley, “when you grow up, what are you going to be?” Riley had no clue! So cousin Joe provides Riley with a plethora of possible career paths, using the successful black members of their family as the examples. Riley learns about his Uncle Ted, the great chef, Uncle Dan the doctor, Great Granddad Frank the pilot, and more. It’s so great to have a story that normalizes Black success. Hamilton’s rhyming text adds to the joyousness of this inspirational story.

Take-away message: You can be anything that you want to be! And what better example to have than the strong, successful black men in your own family.
